Alina Zaiats is a future urban planner with a strong interest in public space design and urban streetscapes. Passionate about a vibrant, people-centered environment, she plans to pursue future studies in landscape architecture.
Throughout her academic journey, she has participated in several collaborative design and planning projects forced on redesigning Saskatoon’s neighborhood and public spaces. These projects include redevelopment concepts for areas such as Warehouse district, with an emphasis on walkability, community engagement, and multi-use, sustainable urban design.
Street design and public space quality is a core aspect of a city’s functionality. Planners when developing new neighborhoods base the designs on those fundamental rules of bringing community together, visual appeal and multi-purpose space for everyone. However, when we look at the parks and roads in the city of Saskatoon, there is a contradiction to those rules. The roads are created only for the cars, many of them lacking even sidewalks, whereas parks are rarely made for different activities, rather for simply passing by to get from point A to point B.
