Redesigning Kiwanis Park: Building Sustainable Interactions in a Saskatoon Third Space

Ongoing urbanism requires that we focus on planning within our cities instead of continuing to sprawl. With the rising urban planning trend of building gentle density, also comes the responsibility of allocating pre-existing space to urban greenery and ‘third spaces’ accessible to the public and which contribute to creating healthy, vibrant, and connected communities. The City of Saskatoon still has work to do to make every square meter count; Nutrien Plaza (Kiwanis Park) in Saskatoon functions as an urban hub in winter from its sponsored rink activity, but it remains neglected space and underutilized the rest of the year. Numerous studies show the negative psychological and physiological effects associated with urbanization; such as stress, isolation, sensory deprivation, and chronic disease. While cities are sites of growth and opportunity, they often lack spaces that evoke feelings of joy, peace, and wellness, ultimately leading to unhealthy populations.
