Nicole Wozniak is a third-year student in the Regional and Urban Planning program at the University of Saskatchewan. She has a particular interest in the social dimensions of planning, as well as mobility and transportation systems. An avid traveler, Nicole draws inspiration from diverse cities and cultures, using these experiences to inform her perspective on how communities are designed, connected, and experienced. She is also an active volunteer who is committed to community engagement and civic involvement beyond the classroom.
This past spring students from the University of Saskatchewan’s Regional and Urban Planning Program participated in Planning 305: Urban Design and Active Transportation. This course included two weeks of intensive active learning in Amsterdam (May 10-23).
Students engaged in cycling, walking, and tram riding, to experience active mobility. Students also visited other Netherland cities including Delft, Utrecht, Houten and The Hague.
The field school experience highlighted the importance of integrated land use planning and good urban design as essential ingredients to support active transportation.
While in Amsterdam, students conducted a research project aimed at drawing a comparative analysis between Amsterdam and Saskatoon. To do this, students in groups of two chose a particular topic of interest and then used video to capture their research story. Video footage was first recorded in Amsterdam and then, upon their return, in Saskatoon. Using editing techniques, each student group produced a high-quality video presentation to highlight their research topic and findings.
